Song of the day: Frank Sinatra (sort of)...

The not so surprising spread of food stamps. I have to tell you, this past week at the high school I teach, there has been a food drive going on where both teachers and students have been encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to help feed the poor. Outside of two students and myself, no other student in my homeroom of twenty one, has brought in any food even after much prodding by me. They don't think the situation warrants the effort. These are senior no less, who you would think would have a bit more sense of the bad economic situation plaguing the country. It is a sad situation. They are too busy with their cell phones and video games, I suspect, to take the time to learn what is going on around them. It has knocked me for a loop, I have to admit. There seems to be no compassion for those who are down and out. I guess that's how the super wealthy feel about the middle class as well. Out of sight, out of mind.
