Local News: Two great individuals get some respect and an apology...
Milford board apologizes to athletic directors for 'misstatements'
MILFORD — The Board of Education apologized to Joseph A. Foran High Athletic Director Anthony Vitelli and Jonathan Law High Athletic Director Frank Luysterborghs for making “misstatements” against them.
At a July school board meeting, Minority Leader David Amendola, D-4, said the school board had to cover $8,000 for uniforms because of a budget shortfall in the athletic account. Amendola said he was upset to have to “bail” out the athletic program because of a shortage of gate receipts.
Amendola questioned whether the uniforms should have been purchased if there were no funds available.
Both athletic directors filed a grievance against Amendola; both tried to address the remarks at subsequent meetings and were denied the opportunity to speak. But at a meeting in October, Vitelli was allowed to defend himself.
He stressed neither he nor Luysterborghs ever overspent their budgets.
During Monday’s school board meeting, Chairman Mark Stapleton, R-1, in a statement, said board leaders, acting Superintendent of Schools R. Michael Cummings and other administrators met with the two athletic directors.
“The statement that was made and the ensuing discussion may have inaccurately left the impression that the athletic directors overspent their athletic budgets. This simply is not true,” Stapleton read from the statement.
“Neither athletic director overspent his budget, nor did either individual place athletics at a higher priority over other district concerns,” it said.
