Fort Pulaski
One of my bucket-list Civil War sites was the moat ringed Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island about 30 minutes east of Savannah. The Union attack on this fort with rifled cannon, changed warfare forever by making this style of brick fortress obsolete. One wall was breached completely by the Union guns resulting in the fort's surrender. The breached section was repaired by the Union occupation forces but much of the shell damage remains to this day. The pictures speak for themselves...
Here you can see where the breached wall was repaired...
Inside the gun casements...
The view from atop the fort's walls...
The big guns atop the fort...
A view toward the enemy...
Big Wally and a big gun(for perspective purposes only)...
If you are a Civil War buff(I always wanted to be a buff), this is the place for you. Make the effort to see Savannah and Fort Pulaski. You won't be disappointed. Next stop Charleston S.C.
