California Coastline Becoming Like Dead Zone, Fukushima to Blame?
Kim M., California Correspondent
I hesitate to say this, because I know that *they* will most likely use my (and others) observations as an excuse to crack down on the enjoyment of our coastline even farther than they have already, but…
The California coastline is becoming like a dead zone.
If you haven’t been to a California beach lately, you probably don’t know that the rocks are unnaturally CLEAN – there’s hardly any kelp, barnacles, sea urchins, etc. anymore and the tide pools are similarly eerily devoid of crabs, snails and other scurrying signs of life… and especially as compared to 10 – 15 years ago when one was wise to wear tennis shoes on a trip to the beach in order to avoid cutting one’s feet on all the STUFF of life – broken shells, bones, glass, driftwood, etc.
There are also days when I am hard-pressed to find even a half dozen seagulls and/or terns on the county beach.
You can still find a few gulls trolling the picnic areas and some of the restaurants (with outdoor seating areas) for food, of course, but, when I think back to 10 – 15 years ago, the skies and ALL the beaches were literally filled with seagulls and the haunting sound of their cries both day and night…
NOW it’s unnaturally quiet. (And especially at night.)
In the meantime – as of this writing – it has been approximately 2 and 1/2 years since the nuclear disaster at Fukushima (in Japan).
Since the beginning, I have kept an eagle eye on the situation, because it just struck me as just the type of “crisis” that would immediately get downplayed in the U.S. press…
And sure enough.
The “story” quickly cycled out of the mainstream news, even though it remained almost a daily staple on energy-industry websites like EneNews.com.
(I check EneNews.com almost every day. EneNews is a news aggregator, which means they don’t write articles – rather they find any/all news articles on the subject of energy and publish salient snippets. As you can discover for yourself, it is all mainstream news – nothing alternative.)
Now that the scandal has finally broken that TEPCO has been lying all along about the severity of the Fukushima accident and the incompetence of their containment efforts, the EneNews feed has exploded out of control (see latest below).
Experts are guesstimating that it will take 2 to 3 years for the CURRENT radiation that Fukushima has been spewing into the ocean to reach the West Coast of the United States…
But when you consider that they are now admitting that Fukushima has been spewing radiation into the ocean ALL ALONG (3 times worse than Chernobyl and it still hasn’t been contained)…
If you have not stopped eating fish, shellfish and kelp from the Pacific Ocean, this would be a good time to do so.
I wouldn’t swim in it, either. (Sorry, surfer dudes/dudettes.)
Do come and visit, though.
I want you to see for yourself how “clean” the beaches are.
Stay away from harbors and urban areas, which will always attract more wildlife and debris…
And go to the rural areas. Bring your video camera and document what you see.
You might lack the frame of reference to know what “normal” is, but I can assure it’s not normal for coastal beaches to be severely lacking in birds, kelp and other signs of life.
