Southern road trip Part 4

Monticello and the Shenandoah Parkway

After a long drive up from Charleston and a short visit to a friend of ours in Columbia S.C. we made a stop at the home of Thomas Jefferson. The weather was cool and crisp like a late September day. After the heat and humidity it felt great. Monticello was pretty cool. We took the tour of the first floor but no cameras of any kind were allowed. So folks, no pictures of the interior of the house. Below are photos of the entrance to the house and various views from the side and the back. There are a few of the gardens and some ruins of an original joiner shop. And then following the developing theme of this trip, there are a couple of TJ's grave-site.

In the museum at the visitor's center there was a scale model of what Jefferson originally had in mind for the design of his home. It is a bit different from the end result...

The view from the other side...

A cut-away exhibit of Monticello as we all know it...

On our way home we drove the Shenandoah Parkway. Some nice views of the valley and after a mile trek down a steep winding path we saw a cool waterfall. The walk back wasn't as pleasant. Thank goodness it wasn't as hot as the previous days. A black bear crossed our path about 50 yards in front of our car but he was too fast to snap a picture.

Overall a fun time was had by all. My wife can't wait for the next long road trip. Is Montana in our future??? Some fat guy having a talk with TJ about that little problem of his with the slavery issue...
