OOPS!!! "That's the heaviest snowfall the city has seen since record-keeping began 120 years ago..."

Record heavy snow falls in areas around Tokyo

Heavy snowfall has blanketed wide areas along the Pacific coast of eastern Japan. A low-pressure system dumped record heavy snow on inland areas around Tokyo.

According to weather forecasters, more than one meter of snow accumulated west of Tokyo in Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture, as of 6 AM on Saturday.

That's the heaviest snowfall the city has seen since record-keeping began 120 years ago.

Central Tokyo had 27 centimeters of snow at one time, exactly the same as one week ago and the heaviest in 45 years.

Weather experts are forecasting snow to continue for some time in inland areas around Tokyo, and through Sunday in central and northeastern Japan along the Pacific coast.

Officials are advising caution as snow could disrupt traffic and trigger avalanches.
