New ethanol blend approved for Iowa, nation
New blend slated to go on market in late summer
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved retailers nationwide to begin selling E-15 blended gasoline.
E-15 contains 15 percent ethanol and has a higher oxygen content.
Al Pieper, an instructor and the Ford ASSET program chair at Des Moines Area Community College, said his automotive technicians are concerned about this new fuel.
“The corrosiveness of it could damage fuel sending units, fuel pumps, fuel lines, seals and stuff like that,” Pieper said.
Monte Shaw of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association said he’s not worried.
“The EPA has tested this fuel more than any fuel in the history of the world. And it works,” said Shaw.
E-15 will not be available until late summer. It can only be used in cars and trucks 2011 model year and newer, including flex fuel vehicles.
In a statement, Gov. Terry Branstad said he was pleased with the EPA’s decision, saying, “I support the expanded opportunities that clean and economical renewable fuels hold for the state.”
