Uganda. It’s a country most Americans know little about. Even this reporter knew only a little bit about this small Central African nation until recent months.
But for whatever reason, Uganda, it’s problems and its people are capturing the attention of the U.S. government, from evangelical congressmen to the president himself.
The president is so disturbed by the humanitarian crisis taking place in Uganda and neighboring areas that he wants “boots-on-the-ground” in that country.
In an advisory role of course. Think Vietnam, circa 1960.
But more about that shocking news in a minute.
Giving the green light to this Obama-led action deep in Africa is the power-mad, election-stealing Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni.
Considered a God-fearing, iron-fisted, “corrupt-but-stable” dictator in power for over 25 years, Museveni is reportedly “close” with members of the secretive “Family,” as exposed by writer Jeff Sharlet in his recent and revealing book The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power.
In the portions of the book about Uganda, Museveni is “a good friend of the Family,” according to Sharlet. And most recently, we see that Museveni likely bought votes via the “printing of billions of Uganda shillings to help buy votes, thereby fueling inflation,” according to a story this week in the Black Star News of New York.
And Museveni’s main opposition leader, the man who was believed to have won the election earlier this year is Dr. Kizza Besigye, considered a true reformer and not a tool of the Western, neo-colonial powers and multi-national corporations that see Uganda as Christian-leaning, American-friendly ‘linchpin” in that portion of Africa.
The West, via the Family, has encouraged “sexual purity” in Africa, where AIDS has ravaged millions.
With ardent support from Museveni and superstitious and conservative Ugandan leaders, the Family’s efforts have indirectly led to homosexual purges in Uganda where recently drawn-up legislation would lead to the execution of gays.
Of course Family members back in the U.S. fall back for cover when this issue is brought up, saying that they don’t support such brutal actions while winking and nodding in support.We all must be pure in heart and Jesus frowns upon the gays and the sexually promiscuous. Purity ring, anyone?
Writes Sharlet in The Family: “President Yoweri Museveni, the Family’s key man in Africa, came under pressure from the United States to emphasize abstinence instead of condoms.”
Resultingly, AIDS rates have doubled, due to the Family’s meddling, via Family cultists … errrr … congressmen like Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania.
“The actual fate of Ugandan citizens was never their concern,” writes Sharlet. “Pitts, in the Family tradition, may have had geopolitics on the mind: with Ethiopia limping along following decades of civil war and dictatorship and Somalia veering toward a Taliban state, tiny, Anglophone Uganda has become an American wedge into Islamic Africa.”
Two months ago Red Dirt Report wrote about the mysterious American Peter E. Waldron, the “international man of mystery” who went from being imprisoned in Uganda on charges of “terrorism” and gunrunning.
Released from his hellish imprisonment in 2006, on behalf of efforts by the Bush administration, Waldron, long-suspected of being a covert CIA operative, returned the U.S. and most recently became the “evangelical faith-and-values organizer” behind Republican Michele Bachmann’s successful victory in the Ames Straw Poll in August.
Bachmann, herself exceedingly critical of gays, has found support from evangelical Tea Party folks and traditionalists afraid of an increasingly globalized world. A good, God-fearing conservative like Waldron, with his international experience and his love of politics was just the guy to help Bachmann round up straw poll voters to support her campaign – at least in Iowa.
It is assumed that Waldron would also be advising a future President Bachmann about African issues and how we can “help” those people, while making sure multinational corporations can work with “friendly” dictators who will allow their countries to be exploited for Jesus – for the right price.
Waldron is an example of the overt intervention America has been having in the African nation of Uganda in recent years. The nation has taken on an important position in African policy for the U.S., particularly when it involves evangelical Christian Republicans like over own U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe of Tulsa, Okla. and U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
These “Jesus guys” (to quote Inhofe) have a heart for Africa, and knowing how chummy Coburn is with Obama, maybe the good doctor had a hand in urging this “intervention.” We shall see if the Oklahoma delegation makes a statement.
But maybe Inhofe, Coburn and the Family had nothing to do with it, or not as much as one might think. Perhaps it was Sister Rosemary Nyrymbe, the nun in Gulu, Uganda who runs the St. Monica’s School, helping orphans and those in need.

We wrote about University of Oklahoma students going to Uganda this past spring on a Pros for Africa “mission” trip, along with African-American professional athletes like the NFL’s Adrian Peterson and Roy Williams.
Interestingly, the charming Sister Rosemary was in New York last month, as part of the Clinton Global Initiative shindig and she was rubbing shoulders with President Bill “bomb the Sudanese aspirin factory” Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright among other power brokers.
Of course it was under Clinton and Albright’s watch that when things got a little hot on the domestic side, a little “humanitarian bombing” was thought to be in order – for protection of U.S. interests, of course.
Yeah, as I recall, the cruise missile attack, on Aug. 20, 1998, took place three days after Clinton appeared before a grand jury investigating his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
And now we see an increasingly diminished president looking at any opportunity to build himself up again. Between the “Fast and Furious” gunrunning and Solyndra scandals, plummeting poll numbers, leftist protesters taking over city centers and general Carter-esque malaise, Obama decides to send in troops to a corrupt, drought-savaged and war-ravaged country like Uganda. Brilliant, professor!
But as we wrote in August, Christian evangelical Republicans and the CIA are often go hand-in-hand when it comes to manipulating third-world nations like Uganda to our ends.
That said, today, on a Friday afternoon no less, we learn that President Obama, has “authorized the deployment to Uganda of approximately 100 combat-equipped U.S. forces to help regional forces” capture or kill the leader and top generals of the violent Lord’s Resistance Army, according to ABC News this evening.
Since we love rocket-firing drones, I suspect that the military is leaning towards the “kill” side of the equation, rather than “capture,” if recent instances are any indicator. Bin Laden shot and dumped in the sea. Anwar Al-Awlaki killed by a drone, and so forth.
Bin Laden and Al-Awlaki threatened America, right? Well, so does the Lord’s Resistance Army, or that is the impression one gets reading the following statement from Obama’s press office:
“The president made this announcement in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Friday afternoon, saying that “deploying these U.S. Armed Forces furthers U.S. national security interests and foreign policy and will be a significant contribution toward counter-LRA efforts in central Africa.”
We all known about “security interests.” It was just seven months ago that Obama (read “Barry’s Excellent Libyan Adventure“) authorized the kinetic military action in Libya, actions that were going to take only a few weeks.
Last I heard we were still involved in “Operation Odyssey Dawn” or whatever Homeric-sounding disaster they are calling it this week. Qaddafi is still at large and the funding keeps flowing … for now.
As for Plan Uganda (or whatever it is called), we are told that there will be the American forces are operating in an advisory role and that they will “not themselves engage LRA forces unless necessary for self-defense.”
Where have we heard that before?
Apparently the excuse Obama is using in this latest “wag the dog” sleight-of-hand distraction is that back in May 2010 he signed the “Lord’s Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009,” heartily supported by both houses of Congress.
This is where the president noted in the press release at that time that the bill “reiterates U.S. policy and our commitment to work toward a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict in northern Uganda and other affected areas, including northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, southern Sudan, and the Central African Republic. We will do so in partnership with regional governments and multilateral efforts.”
Well, we see what happened to the poor and hungry of Uganda last month, as reported by Paul Joseph Watson at Infowars.com. The story was a shocking and barbaric account “neo-colonialism” where armed troops, working on behalf of a British carbon-trading company backed by the World Bank “burned housed to the ground and killed children to evict Ugandans from their homes in the name of seizing land to protect against ‘global warming.’”
But we’re trying to stop “global warming” so humans don’t die, right?
Indeed. We saw how Obama, while in the role of U.S. Senator from Illinois, he violated the Logan Act by involving himself in a contentious presidential election in his father’s homeland of Kenya.
As reported by former U.S. Attorney Andrew C. McCarthy, while investigating the American embassy bombing in Nairobi, Kenya, he discovered information about then-Sen. Obama’s campaigning for Raila Odinga, a socialist of the Luo tribe. McCarthy said Obama’s interference in Kenyan politics, while a sitting U.S. senator, was “more than reckless” and “borderline criminal.”
And when it comes to Obama, what else is new?
