Obama Was Unaware of Website Issues…Like Pretty Much Everything Else

Lily Dane

In an interview with CNN Tuesday night, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius claimed that President Obama was not aware that problems may arise with the Obamacare exchange website, and that he had only learned about the issues in “the first couple of days” after the October 1 launch.

But a report the inspector general for HHS released on August 2nd noted that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services missed multiple deadlines for testing and reporting data security risks in connection with signing up on the healthcare exchanges as the launch date rapidly approached:

“Several critical tasks remain to be completed in a short period of time, such as the final independent testing of the Hub’s security controls, remediating security vulnerabilities identified during testing, and obtaining the security authorization decision for the Hub before opening the exchanges,” said the report from Deputy Inspector General for Audit Services Gloria L. Jarmon to CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner and Chief Information Officer Tony Trenkle. (source)

The report noted that deadlines had been moved and new “very tight deadlines” established to rush to finish security testing and certification of the site with the security authorization decision slated for Sept. 30, the day before launch.

Is it possible that Obama didn’t know about the report and the issues back then?

Not likely, because Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) used the report to ask the administration to delay the rollout:

“Americans should not be forced to enter into exchanges when CMS is so ill-prepared to guarantee the protection of personal data and taxpayer resources from hackers and cyber criminals who would use this sensitive data for personal gain.”

“As you know, I oppose Obamacare and support its full repeal. Yet in recent months, even some of the Administration’s closest allies have raised alarms about the potential implementation ‘train wreck’ to come. While I believe we ought to repeal this law and replace it with commonsense reforms that lower cost, Americans ought to be assured, at an absolute minimum, that their personal and financial data will be safe from data thieves,” he added.

McConnell also pointed out that the final report from an independent testing organization assessing the system’s security was not even expected by HHS until 10 days before launch — “hardly enough time to fix any problems that may be identified.”

No one warned Obama? Not even knowing the embarrassment this failure would bring?

This is hardly the first time Obama or someone in his administration has claimed the President was unaware of an event or issue.

Remember, Obama didn’t know about Fast and Furious until he saw it in media:

“I would only say broadly that the idea behind that thinking suggests that there was some grand plan behind the Fast and Furious program when, in fact, everyone knows the President did not know about this tactic until he heard about it through the media; the Attorney General did not know about it.” – Jay Carney

He also didn’t have any clue about the IRS targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status and targeting them for extra scrutiny, right?

“I am certainly not aware of and am confident that no one here was involved in this. We found out about it just a few weeks ago, and only — and when I say ‘we,’ I didn’t, the president didn’t, but the White House counsel’s office only found out about the review being conducted and coming to a conclusion by the inspector general.” – Jay Carney

The President apparently was unaware that U.S. officials in Libya asked the State Department for more security before the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi:

“We weren’t told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there.” – Joe Biden

Obama also claimed to be unaware of unaware of complaints from Benghazi whistleblowers inside his own administration who said they were being intimidated over their cooperation with investigators into the September 2012 attack:

“I’m not familiar with this notion that anybody’s been blocked from testifying,” Mr. Obama said in response to a question during a press conference in the White House briefing room. “What I’ll do is find out what exactly you’re referring to.”

And of course Obama denied knowledge of Justice Department attempts to seek AP phone records:

“We are not involved in decisions made in connection with criminal investigations, as those matters are handled independently by the Justice Department.” – Jay Carney

Here, comedian Jon Stewart shows video of times when Obama acted as if he had no knowledge of a scandal and told America that he “just found out” about it on the news:

Are these cases of plausible deniability, or outright lying? Whatever the case, it is alarming that our Commander-in-Chief is claiming to be unaware of so many important issues.
