He Was Supposed to Be Competent The spill is a disaster for the president and his political philosophy.By PEGGY NOONAN.

I don't see how the president's position and popularity can survive the oil spill. This is his third political disaster in his first 18 months in office. And they were all, as they say, unforced errors, meaning they were shaped by the president's political judgment and instincts.
There was the tearing and unnecessary war over his health-care proposal and its cost. There was his day-to-day indifference to the views and hopes of the majority of voters regarding illegal immigration. And now the past almost 40 days of dodging and dithering in the face of an environmental calamity. I don't see how you politically survive this.
The president, in my view, continues to govern in a way that suggests he is chronically detached from the central and immediate concerns of his countrymen. This is a terrible thing to see in a political figure, and a startling thing in one who won so handily and shrewdly in 2008. But he has not, almost from the day he was inaugurated, been in sync with the center. The heart of the country is thinking each day about A, B and C, and he is thinking about X, Y and Z. They're in one reality, he's in another.

The defense appropriations bill currently moving through the House of Representatives includes a measure which directs the Defense Department's inspector general to investigate attorneys who may have "interfered with operations of the Department of Defense" while representing detainees at Guantanamo Bay and report back to Congress.
That measure has civil libertarians up in arms. Salon's Glenn Greenwald, for example, described the "truly vile provision" as a "McCarthyite attack on detainee lawyers" and identified it as "the brainchild of GOP Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida, who has labeled efforts to represent detainees ... a 'treacherous enterprise" and smeared those lawyers as 'disloyal.'"

Beijing suspects false flag attack on South Korean corvette

Beijing, satisfied with North Korea's Kim Jong Il's claim of innocence after a hurried train trip from Pyongyang to Beijing, suspects the U.S. Navy's role in the Cheonan's sinking, with particular suspicion on the role of the Salvor. The suspicions are as follows:

1. The Salvor engaged in a seabed mine-installation operation, in other words, attaching horizontally fired anti-submarine mines on the sea floor in the channel.

2. The Salvor was doing routine inspection and maintenance on seabed mines, and put them into an electronic active mode (hair trigger release) as part of the inspection program.

3. A SEALS diver attached a magnetic mine to the Cheonan, as part of a covert program aimed at influencing public opinion in South Korea, Japan and China.

The Korean peninsula tensions have conveniently overshadowed all other agenda items on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visits to Beijing and Seoul.

But critics said they were “appalled” at the system, developed by Microsoft which is also being trialled in other parts of the country.
“This is quite clearly appalling,” said Phil Booth, national coordinator of NO2ID, a privacy campaign group.
“For such a trivial issue as taking out of library books the taking of fingerprints is way over the top and wrong.
“It conditions children to hand over sensitive personal information.”
He added: “The money for such a system could be spent on actual school resources. How about some more books for the library instead?

Census workers can enter your apartment in your absence

What many Americans don’t realize, is that census workers — from the head of the Bureau and the Secretary of Commerce (its parent agency) down to the lowliest and newest Census employee — are empowered under federal law to actually demand access to any apartment or any other type of home or room that is rented out, in order to count persons in the abode and for “the collection of statistics.” If the landlord of such apartment or other leased premises refuses to grant the government worker access to your living quarters, whether you are present or not, the landlord can be fined $500.00.

That’s right — not only can citizens be fined if they fail to answer the increasingly intrusive questions asked of them by the federal government under the guise of simply counting the number of people in the country; but a landlord must give them access to your apartment whether you’re there or not, in order to gather whatever “statistics” the law permits.

In fact, some census workers apparently are going even further and demanding — and receiving — private cell phone numbers from landlords in order to call tenants and obtain information from them. Isn’t it great to live in a “free” country?

Teachers on the chopping block

100,000 teachers nationwide face layoffs
Republicans and some Democrats say the government can't afford an extension of last year's economic stimulus that would add to the federal deficit. The stimulus law kept many school budgets afloat with $49 billion in direct aid to states and billions of dollars more for various programs. But the stimulus funding is trailing off before state and local tax revenue can recover from the recession.

How many of the estimated 3.3 million public school teachers nationwide will lose their jobs remains unknown. Duncan often says 100,000 to 300,000 education jobs are at risk, including support staff. Teachers unions have put the layoff threat in the range of 160,000 -- including 9,000 in New Jersey, 16,000 in New York and 36,000 in California.

Highway construction could come to a screeching halt this summer due to a shortage of paint.
"It's not like this is Home Depot, with stacks of stockpiled paint," said AGC spokesman Brian Turmail. "A lot of paint producers are distributing only 50% of what they did last year."
And typically, if the paint isn't down, the job isn't done, and the contractor can't get paid.
"Depending who you speak with, this could be an eight-week problem, or a six-month one," he added. "We're hoping for the former but preparing for the latter."

A jury issued its verdict, but the press box was empty.

When asked what first prompted him to think that oil and natural gas are generated from hydrocarbons present at Earth’s formation, Gold replied, “The astronomers have been able to find that hydrocarbons, as oil, gas and coal are called, occur on many other planetary bodies. They are a common substance in the universe. You find [large quantities of hydrocarbons] in the kind of gas clouds that made systems like our solar system…Is it reasonable to think that our little Earth, one of the planets, contains oil and gas for reasons that are all its own and that these other bodies have it because it was built into them when they were born?” (7)

When the interviewer replied, “That question makes a lot of sense. After all, they didn’t have dinosaurs and ferns on Jupiter to produce oil and gas,” Gold said, “That’s right. Yet, for some reason my theory was not heard. The theory that it was all made from fossils ha[s] become so firmly established that when the astronomers had perfectly definitive evidence on most of the other planets, it was just ignored, especially by the petroleum geologists who had, by then, called these things, ‘fossil fuels.’ So once they had a name, then every body believed it.

So the sight of the neo-cons trotting out the universally loathed Dick Cheney – he had the lowest approval ratings for any Vice President in recent history – to back Paul’s opponent Trey Grayson was a pathetic effort to characterize Paul as being soft on foreign policy, a tactic that went out of date some five years ago, and its failure was evident in the size of Paul’s crushing victory.

Despite the fact that Paul has vehemently supported his father’s stance of shrinking big government, legalizing marijuana and ending the drug war, putting a stop to banker bailouts, reducing the national debt, lowering taxes, and restoring personal liberties, just because Paul hasn’t explicitly supported gay marriage, this invalidates everything else according to this warped and myopic argument.

Top Construction Firm: WTC Destroyed By Controlled Demolition

Hart asked the company to study the collapse of the twin towers, after which they told him directly, “There’s absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the towers were brought down by a controlled ground explosion.”

North Korea Severs Ties With South on Ship Sinking
May 26 (Bloomberg) -- North Korea said it will sever all ties with South Korea and expel the South’s workers from a joint industrial zone as “punishment” for accusing it of sinking a warship and killing 46 South Korean sailors.

“There is no need to show any mercy or patience for such confrontation maniacs,” the official Korean Central News Agency reported late yesterday, citing the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea. North Korea will “abrogate the agreement on non-aggression” and handle all issues with South Korea under wartime law, the group said.

Neil Young: Oakdale Theater 5/23/10

While searching the net Sunday morning and seeing that Neil was playing solo electric guitar on a video of his show in Albany, I decided I had to see this live. Not only is Neil on a solo tour with his acoustic guitar and piano but also with his famous black Les Paul and his white Gretsch Falcon. I was able to pick up one ticket through the Oakdale website for a hefty $95 the day of the show, but I figured you only live once and Neil is not going to live much longer himself. The seat wasn't too bad, far right 4th row in the balcony, but after watching the warm up act from my seat I went downstairs to a area about 15 rows on the right of the stage where the seats were on a an angle and not well occupied. I figured I'd stay as long as I could. Nobody ever claimed the seat I was in so that turned out fine. Neil opened with a couple of classics one of which was Tell Me Why which I had never seen him play live before. Then he went into the new stuff which was alright but obviously not very satisfying. He soon strapped on the Gretsch and played Ohio blasting it out as loud as one guy on a puny Fender amp could. A heavy Down By The River also got the crowd jumping. He played a few songs on the organ and piano highlighted by I Believe In You from After The Gold Rush. He went back to the electric and banged out Cortez the Killer a new one called Hitchhiker that really rocked and for the finale, Cinnamon Girl. That is when the good times ended. For $95 bucks you would think Neil would play for at least two hours. But, no. I thought maybe the encore would be a three to four song walk through memory lane. Wrong again. Neil played one song, an original that was okay but not what most expected and then he waved goodbye.
After seeing Wilco a couple of times in April, who played for three hours each night without a break, this was pretty disappointing. Neil looked frail and kind of out of it. There were a few jerks yelling out song titles and whole verses of songs that they wished Neil would play which didn't go over with Neil too well. The last time I saw him at MSG in December of "08" he played for three hours himself. It probably had an affect on him. Well, he's still Neil Young, and you have to expect some out of the ordinary actions on his part. Here is a review and the set list as it appeared in the Hartford Courant...

Persistent cold, wet weather delays crop harvests, worries farmers

Sunday's low of 45 degrees in downtown Sacramento matched the low established on that day in 1960. In Red Bluff, the low of 45 matched the low set in 1953. In Redding, the low was 42 on Sunday and on the same date in 1946.

On Saturday, the thermometer in Redding fell to 34 degrees, toppling the 39-degree record on that date in 1960. Red Bluff's low fell to 37 degrees, 3 degrees below the dates in 1960.

At the other end of the how-cold-it-got scale, Stockton Metropolitan Airport on Saturday never exceeded 67 degrees, two degrees lower than the coldest high for that day, set in 1943.
