Bin Laden's body is buried at sea to prevent grave becoming a shrine
With Bin Laden's death anticipated to inspire fierce reaction, his body has been buried at sea.
The U.S. military said the reason for that decision was to circumvent international difficulties in choosing a burial site, but the move also seems designed to prevent there from being any physical shrine to the terrorist leader.
Senior American officials said the body was handled according to Islamic practice and tradition, which calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours.
Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the U.S. official said, so it was decided to bury him at sea. The location of his burial was not revealed.
