This is becoming a joke...

Can a team go 0-162? Does anyone want my tickets to Saturday's game against the Yanks? With all the problems facing the country, I know this is not very important to be focusing on, but at least a distraction like sports helps one to cope with things a bit. But when it adds to your angst, it's time to look elsewhere for escape. Are the Celtics still playing? Thank the invisible man in the sky for the UConn championship. The glow from that run is wearing off though. Baseball has a way of humbling you, I guess. Watch, they'll sweep the Yanks this weekend. I can always dream, can't I?

FINAL: Indians 1, Red Sox 0

Game over

No words can describe this start except for one: AWFUL.

The game ended today when pinch-runner Darnell McDonald overslid the bag at second base on a ball hit to the infield by J.D. Drew. The ball hit closer Chris Perez and bounded to third baseman Adam Everett, who caught McDonald overrunning second base.

The Indians had terrific pitching today, but the Red Sox will go home to play the Yankees 0-6, after being swept by the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians.

The lack of offense wasted a nice performance by Jon Lester, who went seven innings and struck out nine while walking three.

Right now Red Sox are a lousy team

Yes, it’s early. Yes, Reggie Dunlop and the Charlestown Chiefs played before larger crowds than the one that gathered at the former Jacobs Field on Wednesday and Thursday.

None of that explains 11 Boston strikeouts in a game started by Mitch Talbot.

None of that explains three hit batsmen, including two in a row by reliever Dennys Reyes.

None of that explains Kevin Youkilis’ paltry batting average, with two more failures in the clutch on Wednesday.

None of that explains Jason Varitek's mental error that allowed a run to score Wednesday, on what that the 14-year veteran said was “probably the weirdest play I’ve ever been part of.”

None of that explains the meat of the Red Sox order going 0-for-18 on Thursday.

None of that explains oh-and-six.

The Red Sox, many observers said last month, will win the World Series. But they have yet to win a game in 2011.

No sugarcoating. No excuses. Right now they are a lousy baseball team.

Two sweeps to open the season, and the New Englanders are not amused.

“We’ve got to start acting like a good team,” manager Terry Francona said Wednesday.

“This team,” Varitek said, “is a lot better than this.”

But to put a different spin on Dennis Green: What if the Red Sox aren’t who we thought they were?

They won’t finish 0-162. They probably won’t finish 81-81, either.

And won’t that be a sight: The winless Red Sox, jogging out for pregame introductions on Opening Day at Fenway Park on Friday, with the New York Yankees in the visiting dugout.

“We’re just not getting it done,” Youkilis said.
